USD. The total assumes the whole term is paid at registration. Namecheap bills those years at its registration price; the others charge their renewal price. A transfer adds one year to the domain. Before You Buy a .io Domain
Compare the renewal, not the first year
4 of the 5 registrars discount the first year. Namecheap charges $29.98 for the first year and $75.98 for each renewal. Over 10 years a .io costs $482.00 at Cloudflare and $710.00 at Route 53.
Prices rise on January 19, 2027
DomainNameWire reported that Identity Digital, which runs the .io registry, is raising the wholesale price from $50.00 to $56.00 a year. Cloudflare passes registry prices through, so its $50.00 renewal should rise by about the same. Renewing for several years before then locks in today's price for those years.
Transfers add a year
Moving a .io costs one year of renewal, from $50.00 at Cloudflare to $71.00 at Route 53, and the year is added to the current expiration date.
Is .io going away?
The UK agreed in 2025 to hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, but the treaty is not in force. IANA says a change of sovereignty does not automatically end .io. It would only be retired if the IO country code were removed, and that starts a 5 to 10 year wind-down.

.io Domain Price FAQ
Common questions about what a .io domain costs
Renewals run from $50.00 a year at Cloudflare to $75.98 at Namecheap, and most registrars discount the first year, down to $28.12 at Porkbun. Over 10 years a .io costs $482.00 at the cheapest registrar here, about 5 times the price of a .com.
The registry charges registrars about $50.00 a year, against roughly $10 for a .com, and that rises to $56.00 on January 19, 2027. Cloudflare sells at cost, so its $50.00 renewal is close to the floor. Other registrars add their margin on top.
Cloudflare, at $50.00 a year, followed by Porkbun at $51.80. The cheapest first year is at Porkbun ($28.12), but it renews at $51.80, so for a domain you plan to keep, the renewal price matters more.
Cloudflare, at $50.00. A transfer includes a year of renewal that is added to the current expiration date, so moving a .io when it is due for renewal costs nothing extra and lowers every renewal after it.
.io is the country code for the British Indian Ocean Territory, and the 2025 UK-Mauritius treaty on the Chagos Islands has not taken effect, so nothing changes for now. IANA has said a change in sovereignty does not automatically end a domain. .io would only be retired if the IO code left the ISO country list, and that starts a 5 to 10 year transition.
