Before You Buy a .app Domain
Compare the renewal, not the first year
Cloudflare sells at cost: $8.20 for a new .app, then $14.20 to renew. Namecheap charges $11.18 for the first year and $23.18 for each renewal. Over 10 years a .app costs $136.00 at Cloudflare and $200.00 at Route 53.
HTTPS is required
The whole .app extension is on the HSTS preload list built into major browsers, so a .app site will not load over plain HTTP. Get a certificate before you point the domain at a site; most hosts and Let's Encrypt issue one free.
You don't need it for an app store
The App Store and Google Play do not ask for a .app domain. It is a good fit for an app's landing page, support site or web app, but a .com you already own works just as well for the listing.
Transfers add a year
Moving a .app costs from $13.99 at Dynadot, and the year is added to the current expiration date. A registrar can refuse a transfer within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer.

Common questions about what a .app domain costs
Sites for apps and software: landing pages, web apps, download and support pages. Google runs the registry and opened .app to the public in May 2018. Anyone can register one.
It is if the matching .com is taken or the name reads better as .app. Expect to pay $14.20 or more a year after the first, against about $10 for a .com, and to need HTTPS from day one.
It is safer than most extensions by design. Browsers force every .app site onto HTTPS, so traffic between visitors and the site is always encrypted. The catch is setup: the site will not load at all until a TLS certificate is in place.
First-year offers start at $8.00 at Dynadot, and renewals run from $14.20 a year at Cloudflare to $23.18 at Namecheap. Over 10 years a .app costs $136.00 at the cheapest registrar here.
The registry charges about $14 a year, and first-year offers sit below that. Even Cloudflare, which adds no markup, charges $8.20 for a new .app and $14.20 to renew. Registrars with markup widen the gap, up to $23.18 a year at Namecheap.
