About Amazon S3
What is Amazon S3?
Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) is AWS's object storage. You put files of any size into buckets and read them back over HTTPS. There is no minimum charge: the bill is the sum of storage, requests, retrieval and data transfer, and each storage class weights those parts differently.
- Storage classes for every access pattern: S3 Standard for hot data, Standard-IA and One Zone-IA for files read about once a month, and three Glacier classes for archives. Cheaper storage comes with retrieval fees and minimum storage periods.
- Intelligent-Tiering: Moves each object between access tiers based on how often it is read, for a small monitoring fee per object. There are no retrieval charges, which makes it a safe default when you cannot predict access.
- Lifecycle rules: Transition objects to cheaper classes or expire them after a set number of days. Each transition is billed as a request, so moving millions of tiny files can cost more than it saves.
- Free inbound and in-region transfer: Uploads from the internet, transfers between buckets in the same region and transfers to other AWS services in that region cost nothing. You pay when data leaves AWS or crosses regions.
When to Use Amazon S3
S3 fits almost any file that needs to be durable and reachable over the network.
Ideal for
- Backups and long-term archives (with Glacier classes)
- Static website assets and media behind CloudFront
- Data lakes queried by Athena, EMR or Redshift Spectrum
- User uploads for web and mobile apps
Not ideal for
- Block storage for a database or OS disk (use EBS)
- Shared POSIX file systems (use EFS or FSx)
- Serving heavy public traffic straight from a bucket, where egress dominates
- Millions of tiny objects in IA or Glacier classes, where minimums add up
Amazon S3 Free Tier
No free tier
No free allowance. Usage is billed from the first request.
New accounts · since July 2025
No S3-specific free tier for new accounts. AWS replaced the classic 12-month allowance (5 GB of S3 Standard, 20,000 GET and 2,000 PUT requests a month) with up to $200 in Free Tier credits that S3 can draw on. The old allowance only covered accounts created before July 15, 2025 and lasted 12 months, so it has now run out. Every account still gets 100 GB a month of free data transfer out, shared across all AWS services and regions.
Watch out for
- The Free plan lasts 6 months, and all Free Tier credits must be used within 12 months of sign-up
- The free 100 GB of egress is shared with EC2, CloudFront and every other service
- Browsing a bucket in the S3 console makes billable GET and LIST requests

Amazon S3 Pricing Breakdown
S3 Pricing Models Explained
Every S3 bill is made of four parts. Storage is usually the biggest for archives, data transfer out for anything public.
- Storage (per GB-month): Charged on the average GB stored during the month, at a rate set by the storage class. S3 Standard drops from $0.023 to $0.022 per GB after 50 TB and to $0.021 after 500 TB in us-east-1. The other classes have one flat rate.
- Requests (per 1,000): PUT, COPY, POST and LIST share one rate; GET and other reads share a cheaper one. LIST is always billed at the S3 Standard PUT rate, whatever the class. DELETE and CANCEL are free.
- Retrieval (per GB): Standard-IA, One Zone-IA and Glacier Instant Retrieval charge for every GB read. Glacier Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive charge per GB and per request when you restore, priced by speed. Intelligent-Tiering has no retrieval fee.
- Data transfer out (per GB, tiered): Free into S3 and free to AWS services in the same region. Out to the internet, the first 100 GB a month is free across AWS, then $0.09 per GB for the first 10 TB in us-east-1, falling to $0.05 past 150 TB.

Hidden Costs & Gotchas
These are the charges that make an S3 bill bigger than the storage line suggests.
- Minimum storage duration: Standard-IA and One Zone-IA bill at least 30 days, Glacier Instant and Flexible Retrieval 90 days, and Deep Archive 180 days. Delete or move an object early and you pay for the rest of the period anyway.
- Minimum object size: Standard-IA, One Zone-IA and Glacier Instant Retrieval bill every object as at least 128 KB. Glacier Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive add 40 KB of metadata per object, 8 KB of it at S3 Standard rates.
- Lifecycle transitions: Each object moved by a lifecycle rule is a request: $0.01 per 1,000 into Standard-IA, One Zone-IA or Intelligent-Tiering, $0.02 into Glacier Instant Retrieval, $0.03 into Flexible Retrieval and $0.05 into Deep Archive (us-east-1).
- Restored copies: Restoring from Glacier Flexible Retrieval or Deep Archive creates a temporary copy billed at S3 Standard rates for as many days as you ask, on top of the archived original.
- Old versions and unfinished uploads: With versioning on, every overwritten version is billed as a full object. Incomplete multipart uploads also sit in the bucket and bill until you abort them or a lifecycle rule cleans them up.
6 Amazon S3 Cost Optimization Tips
Put CloudFront in front of public buckets
Transfer from S3 to CloudFront is free, and CloudFront has its own free allowance and caching, so you stop paying S3 egress for every repeat download. For a public website or media library this is usually the biggest single saving.
Use Intelligent-Tiering when access is unpredictable
Objects not read for 30 days drop to $0.0125 per GB-month and after 90 days to $0.004 (us-east-1), with no retrieval fee. The monitoring charge is $0.0025 per 1,000 objects, so it pays off for larger objects, not millions of tiny ones.
Archive cold data with lifecycle rules
Data you keep for compliance and almost never read belongs in Deep Archive at $0.00099 per GB-month. Bundle small files before transitioning, since every object pays a transition request and 40 KB of metadata.
Expire old versions and abort stale multipart uploads
Add lifecycle rules that delete noncurrent versions after a set number of days and abort incomplete multipart uploads after a week. Both are common sources of storage nobody can see in the bucket listing.
Use a VPC gateway endpoint for S3
Instances in private subnets that reach S3 through a NAT gateway pay NAT data processing on every GB. A gateway endpoint for S3 is free and keeps that traffic off the NAT gateway.
Watch S3 spend as it happens
S3 costs creep up through egress spikes, forgotten versions and request storms that only show up on the invoice. CostGoat tracks your AWS bill by service and alerts you when S3 spend jumps, so you catch it in days instead of at month end.
Real-World Amazon S3 Costs
Static Website
$38.71
• Storage: $0.46
• PUT requests: $0.25
• GET requests: $2.00
• Transfer OUT: $36.00
20 GB of site assets in S3 Standard serving 5 million GETs and 500 GB of downloads a month in us-east-1. Egress is almost the whole bill.
1 TB of Backups in Standard-IA
$14.31
• Storage: $12.80
• PUT requests: $1.00
• GET requests: $0.01
• Retrieval: $0.50
Nightly backups kept in Standard-IA with 50 GB restored a month. The same terabyte in S3 Standard would cost $23.55 for storage alone.
10 TB Media Library
$601.44
• Storage: $134.14
• Monitoring: $5.00
• Requests: $10.50
• Transfer OUT: $451.80
Intelligent-Tiering with 3 TB hot, 4 TB infrequent and 3 TB in Archive Instant, 2 million monitored objects and 5 TB served to users each month.
50 TB Compliance Archive
$71.27
• Storage: $50.69
• Retrieval: $20.48
• Restore requests: $0.10
Records kept in Glacier Deep Archive with 1 TB restored a month at standard speed. Uploading 500,000 objects adds a one-time $25 in PUT requests.
100 TB Data Lake
$2,394.00
• Storage: $2,304.00
• 10M PUTs: $50.00
• 100M GETs: $40.00
• Transfer OUT: $0
Analytics data in S3 Standard queried in-region by Athena and EMR, so there is no egress. The second 50 TB gets the cheaper tier.

Frequently Asked Questions
In us-east-1, 1 TB (1,024 GB) in S3 Standard costs about $23.55 a month for storage alone, at $0.023 per GB-month. The same terabyte costs about $12.80 in Standard-IA, $4.10 in Glacier Instant Retrieval, $3.69 in Glacier Flexible Retrieval and $1.01 in Glacier Deep Archive. Requests, retrieval and data transfer out are billed on top, and rates are higher in some regions: S3 Standard in sa-east-1 is $0.0405 per GB-month.
No. Creating a bucket is free and S3 has no minimum charge, so an empty bucket costs nothing. You start paying once objects are stored or requests are made. A bucket that looks empty can still bill you for old object versions or incomplete multipart uploads, so check both if a bucket you cleared keeps showing a charge.
For storage, yes, by a wide margin. In us-east-1, Glacier Instant Retrieval is $0.004, Glacier Flexible Retrieval is $0.0036 and Deep Archive is $0.00099 per GB-month, against $0.023 for Standard. The catch is reading data back: $0.03 per GB for Instant Retrieval, $0.01 per GB for a standard Flexible Retrieval restore and $0.02 per GB for Deep Archive. Glacier classes also bill a minimum of 90 days of storage (180 for Deep Archive), so they suit data you rarely touch.
Turning versioning on is free, but every old version stays in the bucket and is billed as a full object at its storage class rate. A file you overwrite every day can pile up about 30 copies a month. Add a lifecycle rule that expires noncurrent versions after a set number of days to keep this in check.
AWS Cost Explorer does not split S3 by bucket out of the box. Tag each bucket, activate those tags as cost allocation tags in the Billing console, then filter Cost Explorer by tag. Tags only apply from activation onward, not to past costs. For per-bucket history, turn on resource IDs in the Cost and Usage Report, or use S3 Storage Lens for storage and request counts per bucket.
